It is not difficult to see why slow cookers have become so popular. Not only can they bring out the best flavours in dishes but also they are really convenient, allowing you to come home at the end of the day to a meal that is ready and waiting. To reap the benefits from your slow cooker, follow these essential tips.

Easy preparation

A slow cooker makes life easy when it comes to preparing a meal, letting you throw ingredients into the pot in the morning and transforming them into a cooked dish by the end of the day. If you do not have time to spend chopping vegetables or cutting meat first thing in the day, do this the night before and store them in the fridge.

Enhance the flavour

The beauty of using a slow cooker is that it can really enhance the flavour of meat; therefore, it is ideal for cheaper cuts, such as lamb shoulder, chicken thighs or beef brisket. According to BBC Good Food, you can also use less meat, as slow cooking extracts a meaty flavour that infuses the whole dish. If you want to bulk up your meal, just add extra vegetables.

Go low

Stick to the low setting on your slow cooker, as this cooks dishes slowly but gently and optimises the flavour. It also means you can get on with the rest of your day, leaving your evening meal in the capable hands of your slow cooker.

Be liquid wise

Unlike cooking on the hob, liquid will not evaporate when using a slow cooker; therefore, only fill the container to half or two-thirds, or to just cover the ingredients. If you are creating a dish based on online food recipes from sites such as, reduce the liquid by about one-third. If you want to thicken the liquid in your slow cooker meals, add a small amount of cornflour towards the end.

No oil

Provided there is sufficient moisture in your slow cooker, there is no need to add cooking oil to your dishes. Your dishes will be less fattening without compromising the flavour.

Keep the lid on

Don’t be tempted to take the lid off during the cooking process to check the food in your slow cooker, as this will release the heat and slow things down.
